How the tracker works
The snow map answers one question: where is it snowing right now around the world. It ranks every location with snow in its next-24-hour forecast, highest chance first. Blue areas on the map cover the same places, so you can see snowy regions at a glance and then open a town for detail.
The list rebuilds hourly from fresh model runs. A town appears as soon as snow enters its 24-hour window and drops off when the window clears. That is why the page is most alive from late autumn through spring and often quiet in summer.

- Portillo, Chile 95%

How to use the map
- Start wide: scan blue regions for your continent, then zoom to your country.
- Then go specific: click the highest-percentage town near you. The place page shows the next 6 hours, the 24-hour chart, and the 7-day outlook.
- Check timing, not just color: blue means snow is expected in the next 24 hours, not that flakes are falling this minute. The hourly strip tells you now versus tonight.
- Desktop first: most of our map traffic is desktop, where hover on the chart gives exact snow, rain, and new snow per hour.
Example flow: map shows the Alps lit up, you open Selva di Val Gardena for depth and timing, then check Chamonix and Zermatt nearby to compare which side of the range gets more.
Finding snow near you
Search queries we see every week: snowfall near me, snow near me, closest snow to me, where is there snow on the ground right now. The fastest path:
- Open the snow map ranked list.
- Find the closest name you recognize and open its forecast.
- Read the 24-hour summary line for depth plus peak timing.
- If nothing is near, browse all cities for ski resorts (they hold snow longest) or set a snow alert so the next storm finds you.
For trips, compare 2 to 3 resorts rather than trusting one pin. A valley town can read 20% while the resort 500 meters higher reads 80% from the same storm.
Why the map is sometimes empty
An empty map is working correctly. It means no tracked location holds snow in the next 24 hours. Common reasons are summer in the Northern Hemisphere, a warm spell between storms, or a storm that has just cleared the window.
Snow returns as soon as it enters the forecast window, usually from late autumn through spring in each hemisphere. Southern Hemisphere resorts in Chile, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand fill the gap during northern summer.
FAQ
Where is it snowing right now?
The ranked list on the snow map shows every tracked town with snow in the next 24 hours, highest chance first. Blue map areas match the same towns.
How do I find the nearest snow to me?
Use the ranked list, open the closest town, and read its hourly timing. For weekend trips compare nearby resorts, since elevation changes totals fast.
Why does my town show blue but look dry outside?
Blue is a 24-hour forecast, not a webcam. Snow may arrive later, fall on nearby hills only, or melt on warm ground. Check the hourly strip for when.
How often is the snow map updated?
Hourly from the latest forecasts. Towns can appear or drop off between updates as storms speed up or slow down.
